"This
is a wonderful collection of covers played with style and
attitude. If this won't get your party going, call it a wake.
Charlie is a very good guitarist that delivers on every track
and in many styles without resorting to mindless noodling. There
is hardly a wasted note. If you are into BLUES / ROCK or the
guitar, this is a no brainer. You will not be disappointed."

(Five Stars) Lightnin' Charlie
Delivers!
Charlie puts on a very energetic blues/rock n roll set live and
he does the same in the studio! I lean more toward his raw
bluesy stuff, but his rockabilly sound is well done too. It's
just not all about his guitar playing, Charlie has an infectious
voice! Honestly, I don't think I've quite heard anyone like him.
If you like blues, traditional rock 'n' roll, and little
rockabilly for good measure, then check out 'A New Leaf' by
Lightnin' Charlie."

"A
stellar collection. 'A New Leaf' contains so many great cuts,
it's hard to single out simply one or two as standouts. 'A New
Leaf' shines as bright and bold as autumn colors."

Bristol Herald Courier
"Lightnin'
Charlie covers some all-time blues classics with sheer
magnificence [on 'A New Leaf'] and his five original songs are
polished with creative soul, rock and harmony. The boppin' tunes
on 'A New Leaf' could bring joy to watching paint dry."

"Tennessee's
Lightnin' Charlie proves a versatile guitarist and a smooth
singer on "A New Leaf" (Blue Chip 3371). Musicians
will dig his range of punchy tones, and most listeners will
enjoy the way he and his band (and engineer) blur distinctions
between vintage
and modern. Top-notch material - A plus; Charlie covers Junior
Wells, Rosco Gordon,
and Magic Sam and submits fine originals like the jumping “Obviously”
and the front-porch
acoustic tune “Blues Are To Blame.” The backwards shuffle
“Miami Tammi”;
the Johnny Watson-inspired ballad “Friend,” where stinging
guitar bounces off cooing
background vocals; and a drum-less reading of Freddy King’s
“Taking Care Of Business”
stand out."

"Lightnin'
Charlie is a veritable icon here in the Mountain
Empire. Everyone who has the
opportunity to see and hear Lightnin' perform is astounded
by his talent and
showmanship - this man really knows how to entertain
a crowd! And
when this amazing husband and wife team [Lightnin' Charlie and
Beth] raise their voices in harmony to praise the Lord in song,
the sound they produce is nothing short of perfection. Charlie
can pick and sing everything from Country to Rock 'n' Roll to
the Blues, and he does it as well as anyone on the planet.
Lightnin' Charlie is one of the most entertaining, yet
down-to-earth guys around, and if you have never seen him in
concert, you're missing out on something really special!"

"The
best blues-based CD I have ever heard, including all the classic
recordings. There is always some deficiency in all records, but
not in this one. Listening to 'A New Leaf' from beginning to end
is truly a musical experience."

Blue Rapture
"A
powerful, polished and fresh original release ['A New Leaf'].
Atomic-powered roots music, somewhere between classic rock 'n'
roll and Chicago blues. Vibrant remakes and superb originals. In
an age where the Americana genre has become increasingly
commercialized and more bloated than ever, here is a release
that is purely American."
- Aaron Crawford
Loafer Magazine
"Rockin'
swamp blues and rock 'n' roll just as I like it. Lightnin'
Charlie's 'A New Leaf' doesn't have a weak song on it. Can't
wait for his next CD."

"An
authentic American original, Lightnin’ Charlie, with his
Stetson hat and Fender Stratocaster, has hit the mark with a
FANTASTIC new CD, “A New Leaf” on Blue Chip Records. GREAT
ALBUM! **** (4 stars)."
- ROOTSTIME (Belgium)
“Lightnin’
Charlie Dolinger, looking disreputably cool, sang like Howlin’
Wolf while the Upsetters smoked behind him. Displaying exquisite
timing and dynamics, tonal variety, and electric communication,
the small band put out big sound and feeling on blistering
blues.”
-
Style Magazine
“I’ve
been to every one of these (National Blues Talent Contest,
Memphis, TN), and Lightnin’ Charlie might be the hottest
guitarist they’ve ever had. He’s got Stevie Ray Vaughan
written all over him.”
-
ESP Entertainment Guide
“This
band has the potential to break out big. They won the Piedmont
Blues Preservation Society’s Talent Contest last July, in
competition with bands from five states. They’ve appeared from
Miami to Memphis to Chicago and wowed ‘em everywhere.”
-
Focus Magazine
"In
the concert setting, Lightnin’ Charlie & The Upsetters are
known for long-winded sets of blues music that sometimes skirts
jazz and rock’n’roll territories. While his shows run the
gamut from a slow boil to torrential fury, Lightnin’ Charlie
keeps the temperature hot. A deft instrumentalist, Mr. Charlie
performs astounding guitar histrionics that will amaze everyone
from blues neophytes to the most studied guitar afficionados."

“Lightnin’
Charlie and the Upsetters held court for over an hour (at
Memphis Blues Festival) and nearly burned down the house. They
placed 3rd in the Blues Foundation’s National Blues Contest,
and should have won.”
-
Memphis Music Monthly
“A
unique combination of gutsy vocals, smokin’ guitar, and
high-energy showmanship. Lightnin’ Charlie was simply amazing
- not because he’d play his guitar behind his head and with
his teeth, but because of the way he could make it sound. An
exceptional guitarist.”

“At
Miami’s Tobacco Road, Lightnin’ blazed through some 12-bar
blues gems and put on a show that too many missed. Lightnin’
Charlie Dolinger is a stinging guitarist.”

"Bottomless
repertoire and enough on-stage warmth to melt the ice in your
drink."
- TriCities.Com
“This
band tackles everything from Muddy Waters, Slim Harpo, and Magic
Sam to Solomon Burke and does so in a way that pays homage to
these greats without resorting to slavish imitation and with a
raw and infectious energy that’s hard to resist. Charlie
imbues every track with the power and instinctive feeling of
someone who has a natural rapport with the genre. A must for all
major blues festivals.”
-
Blues and Rhythm Magazine (England)
“I
was there (1993 National Blues Talent Contest, Memphis, TN), and
I still remember the chills when Lightnin’ Charlie performed
Magic Sam’s “Everynight, Everyday”. The band is tight and
gives Charlie the support he needs in the variety of styles that
they are capable of. One of the best new recordings (Lightnin’
Charlie and the Upsetters) that I’ve heard in a long time.”
- Bob Vorel

"With
such good originals and the added plus of tasteful covers, this
(Don’t Touch That Dial) is a powerful release.”
-
Ed Ivey, Blues Revue Magazine
“Charlie
Dolinger’s charismatic stage persona and off-the-wall guitar
antics grab an audience’s attention like a snake-handling
preacher.”
- The Creative Loafer Magazine
“Charlie
Dolinger is an exciting, accomplished guitarist, but there is no
great shortage of wonderful guitarists. The thing that sets
Lightnin’ ahead of the others is that the boy can sing, too.
The Upsetters are a really tight and bluesy rhythm section. My
only objection to this CD (Lightnin’ Charlie and the Upsetters)
is that it did not come out sooner.”
-
Ann Rabson

“In
the 90’s, many young musicians who are taken with the blues
give it an honest try, yet capture only style, not substance.
But Lightnin’ Charlie and the upsetters, live and on this
album (Lightnin’ Charlie and the Upsetters), deliver the real
goods: deep feeling, power, and spontaneous fun. Lightnin’
Charlie mixes his hip influences with his own fire and
personality to make an album (Don’t Touch That Dial!) that’s
fresh, fun, and easy to enjoy. Clever originals and cool covers.”

"I
recently got a copy of "A New Leaf". I normally listen
to jazz and fusion but Lightning Charlie's album is sterling.
His fusion of blues, rock and rockabilly is flawless. The
production values of his album are excellent. The fact that he
co-produced speaks well of his skills. Anyone who enjoys blues,
rockabilly and the combination of the two will enjoy this album.
My personal favorite is cut #6, 'Just A Little Bit'.
Charlie...you struck gold with your bluesy lightning!"
